Enrichment Activities
The Beyond Cherwell bulletin outlines upcoming opportunities and activities for Sixth Form students, including in-school events, trips and volunteering requests, as well as information about upcoming competitions, challenges and independent work experience or university placements. It is updated on a rolling basis and details how to sign up to participate. All students in the Sixth Form are encouraged to participate at any time; though the activities are all optional, we hope that students will participate in at least one activity each half term as part of their preparation for their next steps beyond Cherwell.
Current Opportunities
Policy creation day at the Blavatnik School of Government:
On 22nd May 2026, Cherwell Sixth Formers participated in an interactive policy workshop at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University. The day began with group icebreakers alongside students from other Oxford secondary schools. Each group was guided by a Blavatnik student mentor, who introduced them to international relations as a degree subject and emphasized the value of networking in public policy settings.
The core task required the students to develop Future Development Goals (FDGs) for a fictional nation and present their proposal persuasively to secure votes from other countries. Negotiating complex national challenges and pitching their strategies proved to be a highly engaging and dynamic exercise.
Through this experience, the Sixth Formers gained key takeaways:
-
Policy Formulation & Strategic Thinking: Working through fictional scenarios taught students how to identify complex socioeconomic challenges and translate them into actionable, structured goals.
-
Diplomacy & Negotiation: Presenting to rival "countries" developed their powers of persuasion, active listening, and compromise, giving them firsthand insight into international relations.
-
Higher Education Insights & Networking: Interacting with Blavatnik mentors broadened their understanding of degree options in governance and public policy, while introducing them to the practical value of building professional networks.
