Level 3 Core Mathematics
Level 3 Core Mathematics is a fully accredited and examined course that allows students to develop their mathematical fluency beyond GCSE, applying mathematical reasoning in an applied context. It develops students’ quantitative and problem solving skills, developing approaches to work with data, statistics, probability, interpretation of graphs, algebra and mathematical models. The course is taught through a range of applied, real-life problems, with a focus to the transfer of skills beyond the GCSE curriculum.
There are four main components:
• Applications of statistics
• Probability
• Linear programming
• Sequences and growth
Level 3 Core Mathematics is equivalent to half an A Level award. Students study Level 3 Maths qualification in Year 12, with taught lessons as part of their curriculum and completing their exams in the summer. The qualification is highly valued by universities and employers and it is particularly useful for those students studying subjects that involve data and logical reasoning, such as Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Business Studies, Economics, PE, Product Design (DT) and Psychology.
All students studying Physics must complete a full Mathematics A Level.
Year 12 Compulsory Component: Students study either the Extended Project Qualification or a Level 3 Maths qualification in Year 12, in addition to their main A Level choices. It is an accredited, official award, recognised by universities and employers. Lessons are timetabled and teacher-led. Students choose between the qualifications as part of their application (see our quick guide to choosing between EPQ and Level 3 Core Maths for tips).
